2025 Weather & Climate Livestream

In response to sweeping cuts to federal climate and weather research proposed in 2025, we organized a100 hour-long continuous livestream featuring over 200 climate scientists and meteorologists from across the United States. The event, which was covered in The New York Times and Forbes, drew more than 180,000 views and generated over 30,000 calls to Congressional representatives.

The goal of the stream was to increase public awareness of the value of weather and climate research and forecasting and encourage the public to use their voices to advocate for funding that keeps that science going.

The event began live on May 28th from NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Sciences (GISS), whose employees were being forced to vacate their office at Columbia University after more than 50 years. We concluded the stream on June 1st, the first day of Atlantic hurricane season. Along the way we covered an enormous range of topics: the health effects of extreme heat and humidity, tornado science, how wetlands store carbon, and the real-world consequences of research funding cuts on weather forecasting capabilities. Below you can see a list of talks given during the stream.

The 2025 Weather & Climate Livestream organizers were Marc Alessi, Jonah Bloch-Johnson, Paulina Czarnecki, Henri Drake, Syl Foisy, Stella Heflin, Nadir Jeevanjee, Nick Lutsko, Miriam Nielsen, Tommy Stone, Andrew Williams, Lily Zhang, and anonymous members of the meteorology and climate science community.
